THE RELATION OF ECONOMIC COMPLEXITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION: AN ECONOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF THE COUNTRIES OF THE ARCTIC COUNCIL

The causes of the disparities in economic development levels between nations have been examined in economic growth literature from Adam Smith to the present. While endogenous growth theories in the literature attempt to explain these disparities, the idea of economic complexity seeks to quantify them and contends that economic development would rise along with level of complexity. The growth-complexity and growth-environmental degradation relationships are combined in this work as a contribution to the relatively new field. The results of our empirical study for the Arctic Council nation group demonstrate that environmental deterioration is influenced by the degree of economic complexity. This decisiveness points in the direction that rising economic complexity causes an increase in carbon emissions and harms the environment.
