Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine publications in the field of autism and social cognition using bibliometric methods to reveal the development trends and thematic orientations of the field. Within the scope of the study, a total of 208 articles meeting the inclusion criteria were analysed in the Web of Science (WoS) database. The analysis evaluated publication trends, international collaboration networks, citation distributions, and co-occurrence of keywords. The findings indicate that research in this field has a 37-year history and that there has been a significant increase in the number of publications, particularly since 2012. The most productive countries were identified as the USA and China. The most influential journals and highly cited articles in the field were identified, while Lotka Law results indicated a low level of specialisation in the field. Thematic analysis revealed five main areas of focus: (1) Social cognition, learning and autism, (2) Neurodevelopmental disorders and cognitive and emotional functioning, (3) Brain structures and neuroimaging studies, (4) Developmental processes and intervention methods, language, face processing and functional brain connectivity. Research topics that have come to the fore in recent years are ‘cognitive remediation’ and ‘social communication’. In conclusion, this study highlights the multidisciplinary nature of autism and social cognition research and systematically outlines
the developmental orientations of the field. The findings obtained provide a productive thematic framework for future studies.
