A NEW DIRECTION IN MEDICINE: PSYCHONEUROIMMUNOLOGY

Öz

In the very recent past, the immune system was thought to be a system that fights against foreign proteins
entering the organism from outside, and the connection between immune processes and other biological
structures and behaviours was unknown. However, as the roles played by the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal axis, which connects the reactions between the central nervous system, the endocrine system and the immune system, and in inflammatory and infectious diseases were revealed, the question of how these clinical effects direct behaviours began to become a matter of curiosity. The namesake of Psychoneuroimmunology, which is a discipline that tries to explain the relationships between the neurological and endocrine systems and the immune system in general terms, is Robert Ader, head of Behavioural and Psychosocial Medical Sciences at the University of New York-Rochester. In their early studies, Ader and Cohen suggested that there was a connection between a person’s mood and thoughts, health status and ability to heal, and they took steps to prove this connection in clinical trials. In this article, it is aimed to examine national studies in the field of Psychoneuroimmunology, which is an interdisciplinary branch of science, and compare them with international studies. In this study, in which the literature is reviewed, our goals are to emphasize the scarcity of publications on Psychoneuroimmunology in our country, to provide information about international studies conducted in recent years, and to give researchers ideas about future studies by revealing international trends. In this review article, qualitative data was used and the literature review method was adopted to achieve the objectives. As a result, discoveries and advances in medicine and molecular biology provide more data to elucidate the path between the endocrine, immune and nervous systems and psychological effects. It is important to compile the results of studies in the international literature in order to give ideas for future studies in psychoneuroimmunology, which is an interdisciplinary branch of science.

TIPTA YENİ BİR YÖNELİM: PSİKONÖROİMMÜNOLOJİ

Öz

Çok yakın bir geçmişte bağışıklık sisteminin organizmaya dışarıdan giren yabancı proteinlere karşı savaşan
bir sistem olduğu düşünülmekte, immün süreçlerin diğer biyolojik yapılarla ve hatta davranışlarla olan
bağlantısı bilinmemekteydi. Oysa merkezi sinir sitemiyle endokrin sistemi ve bağışıklık sistemi arasındaki
tepkileri birbirine bağlayan Hipotalamus-Hipofiz-Adrenal aksın aynı zamanda inflamatuar ve enfeksiyoz
hastalıklarda oynadıkları roller ortaya konuldukça bu klinik etkilerin davranışları nasıl yönlendirdiği
sorusu da merak konusu olmaya başladı. Genel hatlarıyla nörolojik ve endokrin sistemleri ile immün
sistem arasındaki ilişkileri açıklamaya çalışan bir disiplin olan Psikonöroimmünolojinin isim babası New
York-Rochester Üniversitesi Davranışsal ve Psikososyal Tıp Bilimleri başkanı Robert Ader ’dir. Ader ve
Cohen’in yaptıkları ilk çalışmalarda insanın ruh hali ve düşünceleri ile sağlık durumu ve iyileşme yeteneği
arasında bir bağlantı oluşturduğunu öne sürmüşler ve klinik deneylerde bu bağlantıyı ispatlama yolunda
adımlar atmışlardır. Bu makalede disiplinlerarası bir bilim dalı olan Psikonöroimmünoloji alanındaki
ulusal çalışmaların incelenerek uluslararası çalışmalarla karşılaştırılması amaçlanmaktadır. Alanyazınının
gözden geçirildiği çalışmamızda, ülkemizde Psikonöroimmünolojiyle ilgili yayınların azlığını vurgulamak,
son yıllarda yapılan uluslararası çalışmalar hakkında bilgi vermek, uluslararası eğilimleri ortaya koyarak
araştırmacılara gelecekte yapacakları çalışmalar konusunda fikir vermek de hedeflerimiz arasındadır. Derleme türünde yapılan bu makalede hedeflere ulaşabilmek için nitel verilerden yararlanılmış olup literatür taraması yöntemi benimsenmiştir. Sonuç olarak tıpta ve moleküler biyolojideki keşif ve ilerlemeler endokrin, immün ve sinir sistemi ile psikolojik etkiler arasındaki yolun aydınlatılmasında daha çok veri elde edilmesini
sağlamaktadır. Disiplinler arası bir bilim dalı olan psikonöroimmünolojide gelecekte yapılacak çalışmalara
fikir vermesi açısından uluslararası literatürdeki çalışmaların sonuçlarının derlenmesi önem arz etmektedir.
