The Subject of Philosophy and the Discussion of Being According to Kindī
Öz
This article will examine the subject matter of philosophy within the context of al-Kindī and attempt to demonstrate, contrary to popular belief, that the subject of philosophy is not God but existence. Subsequently, this thesis will be supported by some concepts that point to existence. This article examines the subject matter of philosophy in the context of al-Kindī and explores its implications. In short, the article seeks to answer the following two questions: Firstly, what is the subject of philosophy according to Kindî? Secondly, how does al-Kindī explain this subject? The aim of the article is to challenge the widely accepted view regarding al-Kindī’s views on the subject of philosophy. This study is significant as it promises to initiate a debate in the field. The methodology of this study is based on an analysis of al-Kindī’s philosophical treatises. Furthermore, commentaries on al-Kindī relating to this subject are examined in terms of their consistency. In addition, the article employs methods of comparison, criticism, analysis and synthesis. Conceptual clusters such as ‘the truth of things’, ‘the truth of universal things’ and ‘the truth of the first reality’, which al-Kindī identifies as the subject of philosophy, cannot represent God. For this does not accord with the general philosophical stance. Had al-Kindī wished to do so, he would have explicitly stated that the subject of philosophy is God. Furthermore, philosophy is based on the demonstrative, whereas the question of God is a matter of persuasion and discourse. For the existence of things and the fact of existence contain knowledge that is self-evident, obvious and necessary. As for things themselves, since some of them are material, changeable and contingent, their truths are not self-evident or obvious. It is precisely the task of philosophy to investigate these matters. According to al-Kindī, in accordance with the law of causality, the reality of things will lead us to the reality of the First Truth. Al-Kindī investigates existence through concepts such as ‘the One, the Existent, the Self, the Thing, the Substance, the Cause, and the Eternal’. al-Kindī’s explicit reference to ‘feyz’ and ‘ibdâ’ indicates that he was seeking a principle not in a theistic sense but within the context of causality. Furthermore, the ontological sub-concepts al-Kindī employs are concepts that primarily evoke the notion of existence.
