Evaluation of the Relationship Between Dietary Inflammatory Index, Emotional Eating Behavior And Mental Well-Being in Adults

Öz

Aim: Research has demonstrated that mood can impact both mental health and inflammatory responses in adults. This study aims to examine the connection between the Dietary Inflammatory Index, emotional eating behavior and mental well-being in the adult population. Material and Method: This descriptive study involved 248 adult volunteers aged 18–65 years who participated through face-to-face interviews. Along with a questionnaire covering demographic details and general dietary habits, participants were asked to provide 3-day food consumption records to calculate their Dietary Inflammatory Index score. The Emotional Eating Scale was utilized to evaluate emotional eating tendencies and the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale Short Form was employed to assess mental well-being. Data analysis was carried out using the SPSS 25.0 software. Results: The study found that women displayed higher levels of emotional eating behaviors compared to men (p<0.01). Additionally, the results indicated that men had notably lower Dietary Inflammatory Index scores than women (p<0.01). The research revealed statistically significant correlation between the Dietary Inflammatory Index, mental well-being and emotional eating behavior among adults (p<0.05). Conclusion: The findings highlight the potential value of dietary strategies focused on improving the Dietary Inflammatory Index, mental health and emotional eating.
