Does Adverse Childhood Experiences, Diferences in Emotion Regulation and Self-Compassion Determine Depressive Symptoms in Adults?

Yıl 2020, Cilt: 37 Sayı: 2, 59 - 80, 17.12.2020

Öz

The present study seeks to understand the relationship between adverse childhood experiences, emotion regulation, self-compassion and depressive symptoms. It was hypothesized that adverse childhood experiences, emotion dysregulation and lack of self-compassion would predict depressive symptoms. Beck Depression Inventory, Adverse Childhood Experiences Questionnaire, Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire Short-18 Item Version and the Self-Compassion Scale were administered to 342 participants ages 18-64. According to the findings of this study, there were significant relations among Depression, Adverse Childhood Experiences, most of the subscales of Cognitive Emotion Regulation Scale and Self-Compassion Subscales. Depression was predicted by Adverse Childhood Experiences, the catastrophizing subscale of the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire and the social isolation and self-kindness subscales of the Self-Compassion Scale.
