Shared Tradition, Local Network: An Interaction Model for the Lake District in Light of EBA II Pottery from Isparta Province

Öz

This article evaluates a group of Early Bronze Age II (EBA II) pottery of Isparta Province (Isparta) from the Istanbul University Rıdvan Çelikel Archaeology Museum. The assemblage (comprising beak-spouted jugs, miniature beak-spouted jugs, and jars) has been divided into red (Ware 1) and black/grey (Ware 2) ware groups based on paste characteristics, surface and slip colours, firing, and production techniques. Within Ware 2, high-quality beak-spouted jugs exhibit close parallels with ‘Pisidian Type’ depas. This observation suggests that some forms attested in EBA II likely continued into EBA III. Rather than employing a pottery region definition, our study models a two-part interaction network among EBA II settlements in the Lake District. The first part is constructed upon a common cultural foundation composed of similar elements across the Lake District. The similarity between the vessels examined here and examples recovered from EBA II settlements throughout all sub-regions of the Lake District is striking, though it comes as no surprise. This fact indicates the existence of shared cultural traditions across the whole region. The second part is defined by different forms and traditions, which are not found in all sub-regions of the Lake District. Some beak-spouted jug types (Types aI, aII) and a jar type (Type a) have been identified only within the boundaries of Isparta. In this context, it is reasonable to suggest that interactions between EBA II settlements in Isparta, a sub-region of the Lake District, were more intensive and/or complex than previously thought, and that these interactions exhibit features specific to Isparta.
