Faience Cylinder Seals from Tavşanli Höyük

Öz

Tavşanlı Höyük is located in the Inland Aegean Region and, with an extent of approximately 45 hectares, represents one of the largest Bronze Age settlements in the area. Excavations initiated in 2021 have revealed that the mound contains a continuous cultural sequence approximately 20 m thick, with occupation extending from the post-Neolithic period until around 1200 BCE. Surface surveys, geoarchaeological investigations, and absolute dating analyses have enabled a detailed understanding of the mound's stratigraphy. All phases of the Bronze Age are fully represented within the settlement sequence. This article focuses on a group of four faience cylinder seals, which constitute one of the most significant find categories recovered during the excavations at Tavşanlı Höyük. Two of these seals are dated to the Middle Bronze Age, while the other two belong to the Late Bronze Age layers contemporary with the Hittite Imperial Period. The seals are compared with similar examples from Anatolia and the Near East in terms of form, decoration, and material characteristics, while the technical distinction between faience and frit is discussed. The finds from Tavşanlı Höyük provide crucial new data regarding the chronological development and geographical distribution of faience production in Anatolia. This paper aims to determine the position of these seals within the Middle and Late Bronze Age sealing traditions through a typological and technological evaluation.
