A Philosophical Take on Cultural Translation

The study aims to provide a philosophical perspective on the concept of cultural translation. Interlingual translation has been discussed from a multiplicity of perspectives and the possibility of translation has been investigated from a philosophical perspective. On the other hand, the concept of cultural translation, which has increasingly occupied a central position in Translation Studies recently, has not been contextualized philosophically. One of the aims of the paper is to help fill this gap. The research question that the study seeks to answer is the degree to which cultural translation is possible; while answering this question, addressing the possibility of understanding a culture is in order. Another aim of the article is to raise awareness on the contribution of a philosophical take on cultural translation to the discipline of Translation Studies. The study provides an overview of the concept of cultural translation with its roots in Anthropology and locates it within Translation Studies. The analysis of the British anthropologist Evans-Pritchard on the Azande society will form the basis of a comparative discussion of the responses of Anglo-American philosophers such as Peter Winch, H.O. Mounce, William P. Brandon and Nigel Pleasants. The study covers a literature review in Cultural Anthropology, Translation Studies and Philosophy; moreover, it draws on ethnographic data collected through fieldwork with book clubs in the UK. Excerpts from discussions on John Wyndham’s novel The Kraken Wakes and Gabriel García Márquez’s book One Hundred Years of Solitude have been provided in order to help investigate the possibility of cultural translation. The purpose of the ethnographic analysis is to contextualize the concept of cultural translation within the translational act of reading translated novels. Methodologically, the study combines theoretical commentary with the analysis of ethnographic data.

Kitap kulüplerinin John Wyndham’ın The Kraken Wakes ve Gabriel García Márquez’in One Hundred Years of Solitude kitaplarını tartıştığı toplantılardan kesitler sunularak kültür çevirisinin olanaklılığı sorgulanmıştır.
