The Reproduction of Translatorial Habitus and Capital through Translation Awards: Insights from Türkiye

Öz

In recent years, the number of awards given to book translators—particularly literary translators—has increased both in Turkey and internationally. Nevertheless, this quantitative growth has had only a limited impact on qualitative research into the functions, discourses, and symbolic effects of translation awards. This study focuses on two literary translation awards in Turkey—the Talât Sait Halman Translation Award and the Institut français Translation Award—and examines the discourses these awards produce about translation and the ways in which such discourses contribute to the production of capital among translation actors. Bibliographic data were collected on awards granted between 2015 and 2025, including the translated works recognized, the translators awarded, the awarding institutions, and the jury’s statements of justification. The 2025 data reflect only the information available at the time of research. In addition, interviews with translators conducted after the award ceremonies provided insights into their experiences and perspectives. The research employed qualitative methods, with particular emphasis on statements considered especially significant in jury rationales and translator interviews. Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts of field, capital, and habitus form the theoretical foundation, with special attention to the professional habitus of translators. The article argues that translation awards play an active role not only in recognizing individual achievements but also in producing, redistributing, and legitimizing cultural and symbolic capital.

Çeviri Ödülleri Aracılığıyla Çevirmen Habituslarının ve Sermayenin Yeniden Üretimi: Türkiye Örneği

Öz

Son yıllarda, kitap çevirmenlerine ve özellikle de edebiyat çevirmenlerine verilen ödül sayısında Türkiye’de ve uluslararası ölçekte bir artış gözlemlenmektedir. Ancak bu nicel artışın, çeviri ödüllerinin işlevi, söylemi ve sembolik etkisi üzerine yapılan nitel araştırmalarda bulduğu karşılık görece sınırlıdır. Bu çalışma, Türkiye’de verilen iki farklı edebî çeviri ödülüne (Talât Sait Halman Çeviri Ödülü ve Institut français Çeviri Ödülü) odaklanarak, bu ödüllerin çeviriyle ilgili nasıl bir söylem ürettiğini ve bu söylemin çeviri eyleyicilerinin sermaye üretimlerinde hangi yönlerden etkili olduğunu incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Çalışmada, 2015-2025 yılları arasında verilmiş ödüllere dair bibliyografik veriler toplanmış; ödül verilen çeviri yapıtlar, ödül alan çevirmenler, ödül veren kurumlar ve jüri gerekçeleri incelenmiştir. 2025 yılına ait veriler, çalışmanın yürütüldüğü tarihe kadar erişilebilen bilgilerle sınırlı tutulmuştur. Buna ek olarak, ödül aldıktan sonra çevirmenlerle yapılan röportajlar da incelemeye dahil edilmiştir. Araştırma, nitel yöntemle yürütülmüş; özellikle jüri gerekçelerinde ve çevirmen röportajlarında öne çıkan ifadelere yoğunlaşılmıştır. Makalenin kavramsal çerçevesinde Pierre Bourdieu’nün alan, sermaye ve habitus kavramları esas alınmış, çevirmenlerin mesleki habitusları irdelenmiştir. Çeviri ödüllerinin bireysel başarıları tanımanın yanı sıra kültürel ve sembolik sermayenin üretimi, yeniden dağıtımı ve meşrulaştırılmasında da etkin bir rol oynayabileceği savı ortaya atılmıştır.
