The Relationship between the Need for Cognitive Closure and Value Priorities of University Students

Öz

The purpose of this study is to reveal the relationship between the need for cognitive closure and value priorities of university students. Quantitative research method and associational research design were adopted in the research. The sample consisted of 148 university students. Data collection tools are Need for Cognitive Closure Scale and Portrait Values Questionnaire (PVQ-RR). Pearson correlation coefficient, canonical correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were used in the analysis of the data. According to the results, the values that students give the most importance to are security-societal, dependability, care, and concern. The order of importance of higher order values is self-transcendence, openness to change, conservation and self-enhancement. Need for cognitive closure level of the students is high. The highest mean belongs to ambiguity, and the lowest mean belongs to predictability dimensions. Statistically significant relationships were found between the need for cognitive closure and achievement, face, and security societal. Only one pair out of four canonical pairs obtained from canonical correlation analysis has sufficient relationship to continue the analysis. For this canonical pair, all of the four dependent variables (self-transcendence, self-enhancement, openness to change, conservation) and four independent variables (order, predictability, decisiveness, ambiguity) have significant loading. According to the regression analysis results, order and ambiguity predict self-transcendence; predictability and decisiveness predict self enhancement; ambiguity and decisiveness predict openness to change, and order and predictability predict conservation significantly.
