A Novel Application of Chitosan Hydrogel for Eliminate Biofilm Formation on Urethral Catheters

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of chitosan modification of silicon urethral catheters to improve antibacterial activity against to biofilm formation for long term catheterization. Chitosan was first immobilized on the silicon surface through a (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) bridge in ethanol, toluene and acetone solutions, and glutaraldehyde used as cross linker. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy were used for imaging surface modifications and characterization of silicone catheters. Biodegradability of chitosan hydrogel coatings was investigated with using artificial urea solution through pH measurements. The results showed that successful formation of chitosan hydrogels at catheter surface was observed both silicone urinary catheters
