Opposition to Hadith and Deficiency in Tafaqquh: Two Core Debates Between Ahl al-hadith and Ahl al-ra’y and Their Impacts within the Fourth Hijri Century

Ahl al-hadith and Ahl al-ra’y are known to have confronted each other on many issues since early periods. Two prominent topics emerge from these centuries. From the perspective of Ahl al-hadith, the primary claims involve opposition to hadith directed at Ahl al-ra’y. From the perspective of Ahl al-ra’y, criticisms focus on the lack of tafaqquh among Ahl al-hadith regarding the content of narrations.
The 4th/10th century is distinguished from previous periods by unique differences. New types of tasnif belonging to both Ahl al-hadith and Ahl al-ra’y emerged during this era. Within these classifications, certain tendencies aimed at transforming the thought structures of these schools are observable. Discussions between the two schools were likely effective in driving these methodological tendencies.
Two fundamental mutual problems between Ahl al-hadith and Ahl al-ra’y in the 4th/10th century can be identified. Ahl al-hadith accused Ahl al-ra’y of opposing hadith. Conversely, Ahl al-ra’y criticised Ahl al-hadith for failing to perform tafaqquh on hadith texts due to excessive preoccupation with activities like rihla, isnad, and rijal. These criticisms are expressed in the contemporary works of both schools. Close examination reveals a strong intertextual relationship between them. These critiques influenced the structure of the literature and the thought systems of both groups.
Regarding the effects of the accusation of opposing hadith on Ahl al-ra’y, a new method emerged within the madhhab. Ahl al-ra’y compiled the foundations of their fatawa from marfu hadith. They utilised almost every type of hadith science, including isnad, rijal, and ilal. They attempted to eliminate hadith-fatwa contradictions through ta’wil and by identifying the za’f of narrations appearing to show opposition. These efforts were likely related to long-standing criticisms. This specific methodology had not been previously encountered.
Several reasons explain why Ahl al-ra’y adopted a stance aligned with Ahl al-hadith. In the 4th/10th century, the Islamic world struggled with issues involving the Fatimids, Buyids, and Qarmatians. In such a context, an alliance against non-Sunni elements was necessary. Seeking a place in this alliance, Ahl al-ra’y aligned with Ahl al-hadith, who played a decisive role. Additionally, as madhahib, including Hanafism, were being formed, Ahl al-ra’y needed to eliminate accusations to prevent legitimacy problems.
The primary critique directed at Ahl al-hadith by Ahl al-ra’y was the lack of tafaqquh. The intense involvement of Ahl al-hadith with activities like rihla, isnad collection, jarh wa ta’dil, and ilal caused them to ignore the content of narrations. They remained unaware of the fiqh within the hadith they narrated. Consequently, Ahl al-ra’y accused them of failing to understand their own narrations. In this period, Ahl al-hadith included tafaqquh in hadith sciences within usul books. Simultaneously, text and sharh works attempted to teach tafaqquh to traditionists. These developments stemmed from the critique by Ahl al-ra’y, influencing the literature and scholarly work of Ahl al-hadith.

4./10. asırda Ehl-i hadîs ve Ehl-i re’y arasındaki tartışmalardan geçmiş dönemlerden beri süregelen iki temel meselenin ön plana çıktığı görülmektedir. Tartışmalara Ehl-i hadîs tarafından bakıldığında Ehl-i re’y hadise muhalefetle, Ehl-i re’y cenahından yaklaşıldığında ise Ehl-i hadîs tefakkuh eksikliğiyle tenkit edilmiştir. İki ekolün zikredilen tenkitlere 4./10. asırda verdiği tepkiler ise önceki dönemlere nazaran daha sistematiktir. Ehl-i re’y hadise muhalefet ithamını gelenek içinde yeni bir yöntemle cevaplamaya çalışmış ve literatür buna göre şekillenmiştir. Bu bağlamda fetvaların merfu hadislerden temellerini rivayet ilimleri çerçevesinde ve te’vil vecihlerinden de istifade ederek inşa etmiştir. Onların, bu çabalarında, Ehl-i hadîs çizgisine göre tavır aldığı görülmektedir ve bu durum dönemin ilmî, sosyal ve siyasi koşullarından kaynaklanmaktadır. 4/10. asırda Ehl-i hadîs’in maruz kaldığı tefakkuh eksikliği tenkidi ise usûl, metin ve şerh kitaplarının muhtevasını etkilemiştir. Kaynaklarda tefakkuh meselesinin hadis ilimlerine dahil edilmesi, hadisçilere tefakkuh metodolojisinin öğretilmeye çalışılması bu tenkidin yansımaları olarak kabul edilebilir.
