This study examines the contribution of secondary school Religious Culture
and Ethics (RCE) textbooks to learning-teaching processes. The research was
carried out on Primary Education RCE Curriculum in Turkey accepted and applied since 2010, and on the textbooks used between 2011-2017 according to
this program. Textbooks are evaluated in terms of their contribution level for
the learning-teaching process as to the principles of the constructivist approach
adopted by the curriculum. Within the study, general principles of constructivist learning process have been identified through the related literature, and
those that can be identified in the curriculum; thereby the criteria for evaluating
textbooks were obtained (11 criteria in total) and the textbooks were examined according to these criteria. Findings show that the compliance of the examined
textbooks with the principles of the curriculum and the constructivist approach,
in general, is at a medium level (%51,2). This ratio indicates that the textbooks
cannot contribute effectively to the learning-teaching process as envisaged curriculum. A conclusion is that; it is necessary to reflect adequately the expected
qualifications to the textbooks that the curriculum envisages especially from
the introduction and development phases of the learning-teaching process. Research results also assess the contribution of textbooks to learning-teaching process in terms of grades, learning areas and the publishing house of the textbook
(public or private).
