ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʻUdays is a companion who came to the fore with his two opposing attitudes in his relationship with ʿOthmān. Because he was among the companions who joined the Pledge of Riḍwān when the news came that ʿOthmān, who was sent to talk to the polytheists during the Hudaybiyyah Treaty, was killed. However, in the siege and murder of ʿOthmān, his name is also mentioned at the head of the delegation from Egypt. According to the sources of Islamic history, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʻUdays came to Medina at the head of the Egyptians who complained about ʿOthmān's actions and took part in the process leading up to his murder. The events of the ʿOthmān period were generally evaluated with the narrations that were under the influence of ideology. Therefore, most of the time, the narrations can carry the traces of the narrators' presuppositions. For this reason, it is necessary to analyze the narrations about ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʻUdays’s role in the murder of ʿOthmān in a healthy way. In this article, the narrations about ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʻUdays’s attitude in the event of the siege of the caliph are analyzed. As a matter of fact, this effort is important in terms of evaluating the Companions correctly and noticing the ideological factors seen in the narrations. In the study, descriptive and analysis methods are used in accordance with the nature of the subject.
