Determining the Mental Addition and Subtraction Strategies Used by 5th Grade Students in the Objective 5 Intelligence Game

Abstract

The aim of the study is to reveal the strategies they use in mental operations with the thinking aloud protocol by applying the Objective 5 intelligence game (O5IG), which is adapted to mental addition and subtraction strategies, and to determine the students' thoughts about O5IG. This study, which was designed according to a case study, was conducted with 20 fifth grade students studying in a secondary school in the Eastern Black Sea Region. The data of the study were collected with the think aloud protocol, which revealed the mental addition and subtraction strategies in O5IG, and five open-ended questions developed by the researchers. As a result of the analyzes, it was determined that the students used the strategy of "dividing the numbers according to the multiples of 10" the most, and the strategy of "breaking down one of the numbers to complete them by 10 or multiples of 10" the least. It was determined that the students used the strategy of "subtraction in pieces" the most and the strategy of "posing an equivalent problem" the least in the process of disorientation. According to the results obtained from the open-ended questions, it was determined that the students paid more attention to the rules of the game in O5IG, they had some difficulties in the game process, the related game contributed to the cognitive and social development areas of the students, and they wanted to play intelligence games (IG) on the mathematics subjects they chose. Among the games in the content of IG course, which is an elective course in schools, it is recommended that the games that students are more familiar with and enjoy playing are determined and adapted to mathematics and applied in the process. Therefore, in these games, it is possible for students to discover their own strategies, perform operations and gain experience to improve their number sense skills.
