Effect of Social Projects on Developing Leadership, Problem Solving and Assertiveness Skills By Using Peer Education Method

Öz

Introduction: It is expected to be earned for nurses to demonstrate a leadership and assertive behavior in order to solve their problems effectively and that these behaviors be acquired to acquire these behaviors during their professional education. Aim: The present study was conducted to determine the effect of social projects -in which peer-education methods of social learning theory were used- on developing leadership, problem solving and assertiveness skills in nursing students. Methods: Study was performed mixed method with fourth grade nursing students of faculty of health sciences of a university in Middle Anatolia Region of Turkey. Six students who were deep-interviewed were chosen by simple randomization among all listed students. Data were collected by a questionnaire including questions about socio- demographic characteristics, Scale of Leadership Behavior, and Inventory for Problem Solving and Assertiveness Inventory for Rathus. Institutional permission and written consent from students were taken. Data were analyzed with t test and correlation analysis. The qualitative portion was presented after the audio recording decipher without the participants expressions modification. Results: There was a positive correlation between assertiveness and leadership (p<.010). Problem solving was negatively correlated with leadership and assertiveness (p<.010). The negative association was resulted from the efficiency in problem solving of low score taken from inventory for problem solving. Cronbach alfa coefficients of scale and inventory were .82 for Identification Form for Leadership Behavior, .92 for Inventory for Problem Solving and .76 for Assertiveness Inventory for Rathus. Conclusion: It was determined that peer-education through social projects given by students improved leadership behaviors, assertiveness and problem solving skills
