GENDER PERCEPTION TOWARDS WORKS AND POSITIONS IN HOTEL ESTABLISHMENTS
Öz
It is observed in business life that some jobs and positions are identified with women and some with men, however it is difficult to assert that there is a certain correlation between the works done, the position in charge and gender. Most of the time, a job or position dominated by a gender is the result of a reflection of society’s perception on gender and unfair conditions. Thus, some jobs and positions are classified according to gender specific roles in tourism sector, like most of other fields and male- dominated social structure became apparent in some areas. This causes inequality against women in work. In this study it is aimed to review the tourism stundents’ perceptions towards some jobs and positions in lodging industry about gender. 253 students having education in tourism department of a public university were asked questions in a survey about gender perception in some areas and the data collected were analyzed through Chi-Square Test of Independence methods. The survey founds that almost all management positions were identified with men according to the students and low- skilled jobs and positions seemed dominated by both men and women or only women. It was found out that generally, perceptions regarding female- dominated jobs and positions were more disadvantageous.
