In this study, the phenomenon of uncertainty (ambiguity) is discussed in terms of the purposes of religious education. The relevant literature was examined according to the document analysis method. The study aimed to make a discussion that can help to develop a perspective to balance the protection from the harms of ambiguity and benefiting from its advantages in religious education. The study’s conclusions and recommendations are as follows: (1) One of the main purposes of religious education should be “to contribute to the ability of individuals to live in harmony with uncertainties”. (2) Considering the basic aims of religious education, the approach of religious education to uncertainties should be positioned somewhere between modernity and postmodernity. (3) It is expected that the discipline of religious education will discuss the theories, methods, and approaches that will “develop the ability to live with ambiguities” and produce literature to guide the religious education processes. (4) In religious education, the habit of living in harmony with uncertainty should be given to the learners, gradually and measuredly, starting from the first stages. (5) Based on the idea that is preparing for the future lies in the sense of being ready for uncertain situations, competencies, and acquisitions aiming more specifically at living with uncertain situations should be included in both pre-graduate and undergraduate and graduate programs.
