The Insurance System from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic at the Beginning of the 20th Century and Findings on International Insurance Companies
Abstract
In this study, the end of the 19th century and the 20th century, covering the last period of the Ottoman Empire and the Early Republican Period. Insurance activities in the first quarter and the period immediately following are discussed. In addition, determinations were made on insurance agencies such as fire, life, accident, etc. that international insurance companies opened in Ottoman cities.
During this period, European states chose the Ottoman cities as a commercial sphere of influence. With the increase in fabricated production, the risks experienced in the process of flooding the imported products to the Ottoman port cities and transferring them to the domestic market through European traders increased the need for insurance. Ottoman insurance, which started with maritime shipping insurance, brought the need for other types of insurance. European states have opened their companies' agencies in cities where their commercial spheres of influence are high. The most striking factor here is that almost all of the companies are of foreign origin, according to insurance types.
In our study, the commercial influence of international insurance companies in Ottoman cities and the political and commercial effects of European states in the cyclical context are discussed with documents and resources.
