Effects of Seedling Diameter and Height on Survival of Black Pine (Pinus nigra), Taurus Cedar (Cedrus libani) and Turkish Oak (Quercus cerris) in Semi-aridland Afforestation

Seedling morphology is used to determine seedling quality and it is assumed to have influence on seedling survival. In this study, effects of seedling diameter and height on survival of Black pine (Pinus nigra), cedar (Cedrus libani) and Turkish oak (Quercus cerris) in semi-arid land afforestations were investigated. The experimental plots were situated on designated afforestation areas of Eskisehir Regional Directorate of Forestry for the year 2012-2013 period. The seedlings were planted Mihalıççık/Eskişehir, Sobran/Kütahya and Taşoluk/Afyon provinces. Seedling diameters and heights were measured following the plantation. At the end of the first growing season the survival rates of the seedlings were determined. The highest survival rates were recorded for the Turkish oak seedlings which have 4,5 mm root collar diameter and for the Black Pine seedlings which have 12 cm shoot height.
