The relationship between infectious disease perception and disease avoidance attitudes among seasonal agricultural workers during the pandemic: a cross-sectional study

Öz

This study aims to examine factors associated with seasonal agricultural workers’ perceptions of COVID-19 and their attitudes toward avoiding the disease. This descriptive and correlational study includes 102 seasonal agricultural workers aged 18- 65. Data were collected online via Google Forms using a Personal Information Form, the COVID-19 Avoidance Attitudes Scale, and the COVID-19 Disease Perception Scale. Ethical approval was obtained. Among participants, 84.3% were vaccinated, 24.5% had previously been diagnosed with COVID-19, 18.6% had experienced a workplace accident in the last year, and 41.2% had lost their job during the pandemic. A weak negative correlation is identified between COVID-19 disease perception and both average daily working hours (p=0.044) and the number of seasonal workers in the family (p=0.030). COVID-19 avoidance attitude scores are significantly higher among those without a workplace accident in the past year (p=0.018), those never diagnosed with COVID-19 (p=0.023), and those reporting the implementation of preventive measures in their workplaces (p=0.012). COVID-19 disease perception among seasonal agricultural workers is associated with gender, age, smoking status, age of starting seasonal work, daily working hours, family size in seasonal labor, job loss during the pandemic, and disease avoidance attitudes.
