The Changing Status of Izmir (Turkey) within the Interprovincial Migrations at the Beginning of the 21st Century
Öz
In Turkey, the migration from rural to urban areas, especially since 1950, was initially limited to large centres. Izmir, which is one of these centres, became the province that received the most immigration until 2000. The purpose of this study is to reveal the changes in Izmir’s net migration amount, its status within the country and the geographical dimensions of its migration areas by examining the migration outcomes of Izmir since the year 2000. Migration data of Address Based Population Registration System (ABPRS) of TURKSTAT was used in the study and the results obtained from these data were compared with previous studies.
The most important of the results is the decrease in the net migration of Izmir. This decrease has also caused to end the fact of being the most migrated province after Istanbul that Izmir has preserved for many years. Ankara, Antalya and Kocaeli provinces have left Izmir behind in net migration. The stagnation of Izmir in economic terms, the low share of public investments and the high rates of unemployment have been effective in this result. When the geographical distribution of Izmir’s net migration income is analyzed, it is seen that Izmir’s population only emigrated to Marmara region and for net migrations it is observed that the net migration from the Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia regions continues to increase.
