An Analysis of Borges’s “The Circular Ruins” in Terms of Imagination Theory

Abstract

The Argentinean writer, Jorge Luis Borges, in his “The Circular Ruins”, as in many of his other works, constructs a universe rich in symbolism. One of the hallmarks of the story is, the so-called “infinite regression” seen in much of Borges’s fiction. The writer inspired by various philosophical thoughts uses this endless chain of reasoning in his works. Thus, analyzing this story through the lens of the Theory of Imagination is convenient for comprehending the story’s symbolic world and for a better understanding of the objective of the writer. At the beginning of the article, the philosophical ideas seen in the story are identified and explained. Then, the Theory of Imagination, which is the theory used in the analysis of the present story, is divulged along with the concepts of “diurnal” and “nocturnal” orders, and the two structures that are named “mystical” and “synthetic.” Taking all the symbols into account, by consulting the dictionaries of symbolism and interpreting them according to the dynamics of the regime in which these symbols come to the fore, “The Circular Ruins” is analyzed in light of the integrity of the meaning of the structures and the archetypes that captivate the reader’s attention. And lastly, within the framework of the Theory of Imagination, the dominating regime in the story is assessed: why is it dominant, what it implies concerning the protagonist, the time and the place, and the story's narrative.

Borges’in “Döngüsel Yıkıntılar” Adlı Öyküsünün İmgelem Kuramı Açısından İncelenmesi

Öz

Analizimize konu olan Jorge Luis Borges’in “Döngüsel Yıkıntılar” adlı öyküsünde Arjantinli yazar, başka birçok eserinde olduğu gibi, sembolik açıdan oldukça zengin bir dünya kurmuştur. Okur olarak bu öyküde öne çıkan fikrin “sonsuz döngüsellik” olduğunu görmekteyiz. Bu fikrin aynı zamanda yazarın farklı öykülerine, denemelerine konu olduğu ve yazarın bu fikri eserlerinde türlü felsefi düşüncelerden esinlenerek kullandığı bilinen bir gerçektir. Bu nedenle eserin İmgelem Kuramı perspektifinden analiz edilmesinin, eserin sembolik dünyasının deşifre edilmesi ve eserin kapsamlı bir biçimde anlaşılması için uygun olacağı kanaatindeyiz. Makalemize başlarken öncelikle öyküde görülen felsefi düşünceleri tespit ettik ve öykü ile olan ilişkilerini açıkladık. Ardından analizin gerçekleştirilmesinde yararlanılacak kuram olan imgelem kuramı ve kuramın temeli olan “gündüz” ve “gece” rejimleri, beraberindeyse gece rejiminin yapıları olan “mistik” ve “sentetik” yapı hakkında belli başlı bilgilere yer verdik. Ayrıca “arketip” terimi ve imgelem çizgisinde ne anlama geldiği ile ilgili açıklamalarda bulunduk. Sonrasında ise “Döngüsel Yıkıntılar” adlı öykünün imgelem kuramı dinamiklerine uygun şekilde çözümlenmesini gerçekleştirdik. Öyküde öne çıkan semboller başvurduğumuz sembol sözlükleri ile açıklanmış ve rejim dinamiklerine göre yorumlanmıştır. Bununla birlikte baskın yapılar ve arketiplerin anlam bütünlüğüne göre değerlendirmeleri yapılmış ve öyküde baskın gelen rejim; bu rejimin niçin baskın geldiği ve başkişi, öykünün zamanı, uzamı ve anlatısı çerçevesinde tüm bunların ne anlama geldiği ile ilgili İmgelem Kuramı ekseninde değerlendirmeler yapılmıştır.
