Tâhâ Huseyn’in “Mustakbelu’s-Sekâfe Fî Mısr” Adlı Eserinde Eğitime Ve Arap Diline Dair Görüşleri

Abstract

A crucial Egyptian writer, critic, and intellectual, Tâhâ Huseyn is a man of letters who made significant contributions to the modernization of Egypt. Having witnessed the various problems Egypt faced in its development phase, he looked at them from the perspective of an academic and has provided solutions. His works in differing areas draw the attention of researchers even today. This study, based on Tâhâ Huseyn’s Mustakbelu's-Sekâfe fî Mısr (The Future of Culture in Egypt), reveals his views on the impact of education and language on the progress of a society. This work, written after returning to Egypt from France, is almost like a manifesto expressing his disappointment about the Egyptian education system. He claims that the way to correct these malpractices in Egypt's education system is to implement an education system that takes the West as an example. Primary education is necessary, firstly, for individuals to survive and, secondly, for the state to establish national unity. Likewise, like their citizens, nations need primary education to ensure their continuity and their future. This is because primary education is part of the national heritage and must be transmitted to all individuals from generation to generation. Arguing that foreign languages learned in educational systems should not be limited to English and French, Huseyn says that science, literature, philosophy, culture, and knowledge are not specific only to the British and French and that other living European languages are at least as privileged as English and French. Culturally and scientifically, these nations are just as successful and special as the British and French. He argues that Arabic should be learned not simply because it is the language of Islam or Arab scholars and Arab people in history but because it will be the language of both the past, today, and future generations. Against voices who claim that Arabic is taught because it’s the language of religion, he states that although it is great to speak the language of religion, language should be exempt from everything, stability, and freedom of thought. And religion is exempt from all these. This work, written by Taha Huseyn after returning to Egypt from France, is almost like a manifesto in which he expresses his disappointments about the Egyptian education system. The way to correct these distortions in Egypt's education system is to implement an education system that takes the West as an example. Primary education is necessary, firstly, for individuals to survive, and secondly, for the state to establish national unity. Likewise, nations need primary education to ensure their survival and continuity. Because primary education is also included in the national heritage that must be transmitted to all individuals from generation to generation. Arguing that the foreign languages that need to be learned should not be limited to English and French, Huseyn says that science, literature, philosophy, culture and knowledge are not specific only to the British and French people but that there are other living European languages that are at least as privileged as English and French. These nations are at least as successful and special as the British and French in terms of culture and science. He argues that Arabic should be learned not because it is the language of Islam or the language of Arabs who lived in past ages, but because it will be the language of both the past, today and future generations. In the face of those who claim that Arabic is taught because of being the language of religion, he states that it is nice to speak the language of religion, but although he accepts this, he states that the language should be exempt from everything, stability, freedom of thought, and religion is exempt from all these.
