Deformed Bodies in Mehmet Güleryüz’s Works: Identity and Social Criticism
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Works of art have been prominent forms of self-expression for centuries. Deformation as an artistic tool stands out as one of the essential tools of expression that renders societal and individual conflicts visible. Mehmet Güleryüz focuses on bodily deformation in his oeuvres to pursue political and social criticism in a striking manner. He does not limit his work to aesthetic concerns, but always presents social and political criticism of the period in his compositions. One of the reasons for Güleryüz's portrayal of deformed bodies is the political conditions of his period. The coups and memorandums in Turkey during Güleryüz's early period led to radical changes in the artists' approaches and caused a significant change, especially in figurative art. Güleryüz' emphasis on bodily deformation and his distinct modes of expression are tools to emphasize the impact of the political atmosphere on people. Distorted proportions, distorted faces, and exaggerated facial expressions reflect the fragility of the individual in the face of authoritarian regimes and their violence. On the other hand, deformation also partly serves as social criticism. Güleryüz’s grotesque art style reveals the individual struggle not only against political authority but also against social norms and value judgments. Caricaturized figures, exaggerated gestures, and conscious body distortion directly criticize the individual’s role in society. By making the norms disturbing, this language of expression aims to make the audience think, question, and confront reality. This study analyzes Güleryüz’s works in the context of deformation and the grotesque, examines the historical origins of deformation and Güleryüz's portrayal of deformation in the context of expressionism and grotesque, while using a visual analysis method within the framework of expressionist art. The study concludes with the messages conveyed through the deformed body, emphasizing how deformed figures are used as a means of political and social criticism in Güleryüz's art.
