Nurses' Opinions on Working with Cancer Patients, Their Copeing Styles, Their Satisfaction Levels, and the Predictors of the Satisfaction Levels

Objective: The study was carried out to determine the opinions of nurses working in the field of oncology about working with cancer patients, their coping styles, their satisfaction levels and the factors that predict their satisfaction levels. Methods: The study, conducted nationwide, is cross-sectional and descriptive. The sample of the study consisted of a total of 1189 nurses working in the oncology departments of 32 hospitals with high patient capacity in Turkey. The data was collected with a survey form prepared by the researchers by reviewing the relevant literature. Descriptive statistics, t test, analysis of variance, Pearson correlation and multiple regression analysis were used to analyze the data. Results: Nurses reported negative views regarding cancer and the care of cancer patients. It was observed that nurses who were moderately satisfied with working with cancer patients used the methods of supporting each other as a team (53.8%) and engaging in hobbies (44.2%) in coping with the negative effects of working with cancer patients. The nurses' age, education level, hospital type, working style, oncology unit, working time as a nurse and in the current hospital, willingly working in oncology, willingness to change the unit they work in, and receiving training on psychosocial care were included in the multiple regression analysis. It was found to be significant in predicting satisfaction with working with patients and explained 23% of the variance. Working in a private hospital, choosing to work in oncology, and not wanting to change the unit they work in were determined as independent predictors of satisfaction with working with cancer patients. Conclusion: There is a need to change nurses' perceptions about cancer and the care of cancer patients. Results have emerged that can be taken into account in the selection of nurses to work in the field of oncology and the regulation of their working conditions. Öz

Hemşirelerin Kanser Hastalarıyla Çalışmaya İlişkin Görüşleri, Başetme Biçimleri, Memnuniyet Düzeyleri ve Memnuniyet Düzeylerinin Yordayıcıları Amaç: Çalışma onkoloji alanında çalışan hemşirelerin kanser hastalarıyla çalışmaya ilişkin görüşlerini, başetme biçimlerini, memnuniyet düzeylerini ve memnuniyet düzeylerini yordayan faktörleri belirlemek amacıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Yöntem: Ülke çapında gerçekleştrilen çalışma kesitsel ve tanımlayıcı türdedir. Araştırmanın örneklemini, Türkiye’de hasta kapasitesi fazla olan 32 hastanenin onkoloji bölümünde çalışan toplam 1189 hemşire oluşturmuştur. Veriler araştırmacılar tarafından ilgili literatür incelenerek hazırlanan anket formu ile toplanmıştır. Verilerin analizinde tanımlayıcı istatistikler, t testi, Varyans analizi, Pearson korelasyonu ve çoklu regresyon analizi kullanılmıştır. Bulgular: Hemşireler, kansere ve kanser hastalarının bakımına ilişkin olumsuz görüşler bildirmiştir. Kanser hastalarıyla çalışmaktan orta düzeyde memnuniyet duyan hemşirelerin kanser hastalarıyla çalışmanın olumsuz etkileriyle başetmede, ekip olarak birbirini destekleme (%53.8) ve hobilerle ilgilenme (%44.2) yöntemlerini kullandıkları görülmüştür. Hemşirelerin yaşı, eğitim düzeyi, hastane tipi, çalışma biçimi, onkolojide çalışılan birim, hemşire olarak ve mevcut hastanede çalışma süresi, onkolojide isteyerek çalışma durumu, çalıştığı birimi değiştirme isteği ve psikososyal bakımla ilgili eğitim alma durumu çoklu regresyon analizine dâhil edilmiş, model, hemşirelerin kanser hastalarıyla çalışmaya ilişkin memnuniyetini tahmin etmede anlamlı bulunmuş ve varyansın %23’nü açıklamıştır. Özel hastanede çalışmak, onkolojide çalışmayı seçmiş olmak ve çalıştığı birimi değiştirmeyi istememek kanser hastalarıyla çalışma memnuniyetinin bağımsız yordayıcıları olarak belirlenmiştir. Sonuç: Hemşirelerin kansere ve kanser hastalarının bakımına ilişkin algılarının değiştirilmesine ihtiyaç vardır. Onkoloji alanında çalışacak hemşirelerin seçiminde ve çalışma koşullarının düzenlenmesinde dikkate alınabilecek sonuçlar ortaya çıkmıştır.
