This study reports on
the development a measurement tool to elicit the views of science (science and
technology) teachers concerning the transition from elementary to secondary
education system in Turkey. Following a literature review, a 5-point
Likert-type questionnaire of 37 items was created and presented to field
experts for evaluation and administered to 71 science teachers as a pilot
application. The study group of the research is composed of the
science teachers who entered the courses in the 8th grade in İzmir, Konya,
Aksaray, Rize and Gaziantep in 2015-2016 academic year. After making the necessary revisions based on the
results of the pilot application and expert recommendations, a 17-item scale
was finalized. The construct
validity of the scale was determined using an exploratory factor analysis.
According to this analysis, the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) value was .650, and
Bartlett’s test produced a significant result at p = .000. Five factors were
identified and they explained 62.047% of the total variance. The reliability
coefficient (Cronbach’s alpha, α) of Factors 1 to 5 were found to be .748,
.743, .776, .666 and .605, respectively, indicating that the scale is valid and
reliable. In this context, it is
thought that this scale, which was developed to measure
the opinions of Science teachers about the Transition System from Elementary to
Secondary Education system, will contribute to the literature. The sample
sufficiency value (KMO) was found to be .665, which was greater than the
accepted critical threshold (.60) We think that this scale prepared will be
used by modified it in the transition from elementary to secondary education
system which be applied after that.
