Occupational Accidents and Perceived Occupational Health and Safety Competency Among Resident Physicians: A University Hospital Example

Öz

This study aimed to evaluate resident physicians’ knowledge, attitudes, and awareness regarding occupational accidents and to examine factors associated with perceived occupational health and safety competency. This cross-sectional study was conducted among resident physicians working at Necmettin Erbakan University Faculty of Medicine Hospital. A total of 175 resident physicians who voluntarily participated were included. Data were collected using a questionnaire covering sociodemographic characteristics, occupational accident experiences, and knowledge and attitudes regarding occupational accidents, along with the Occupational Health and Safety Perceived Competency Scale. Descriptive statistics, the Mann–Whitney U test, the Kruskal–Wallis test, and Spearman correlation analysis were used for statistical evaluation. More than half of the participants (55.4%) reported experiencing at least one occupational accident during their professional life. The majority of residents (86.3%) believed that occupational accidents were not adequately reported. Perceived occupational health and safety competency did not differ according to gender or specialty; however, it was significantly higher among residents who had received occupational health and safety training, were knowledgeable about reporting procedures, and regularly used personal protective equipment (p<0.05). No significant association was found between having experienced an occupational accident and perceived competency levels. Occupational accidents are common among resident physicians, while knowledge regarding reporting procedures and occupational health and safety legislation appears to be limited. Perceived occupational health and safety competency seems to be more closely related to training and safe working behaviors than to demographic characteristics.
