Public Health Departments and Faculty Members in Türkiye: Distribution, Characteristics, and Factors Associated with the Web of Science h-Index—A National Bibliometric Study

Öz

This national descriptive cross-sectional study characterized the publicly observable academic landscape of public health departments at medical schools in Türkiye, with a particular focus on the distribution and correlates of the WoS h-index. Faculty and institutional data were collected from publicly available sources in June 2026. WoS h-index values were retrieved from Web of Science Researcher Profiles and institutional research information management systems and evaluated using a predefined validation protocol. Of 112 medical schools, 102 (91.1%) had an active department of public health. The study included 326 faculty members, 165 (50.6%) of whom were women. WoS h-index data were available for 284 faculty members (87.1%); the median was 6 (interquartile range, 3–11). Median h-index values were 11 among professors, 5 among associate professors, and 2 among assistant professors. Of 247 faculty members eligible for the institutional continuity analysis, 108 (43.7%) worked at the university where they had completed public health training. Institutional continuity was more frequent at medical schools established more than 40 years earlier than at newer schools (65.6% vs. 19.0%). In multivariable analysis, time since completion of public health training and department size were independently associated with a higher WoS h-index, whereas gender was not. Career duration and institutional context should be considered when interpreting h-index values among public health faculty.
