The purpose of the study is to examine mothers’ shared story book
reading behaviors at home with their children in relation to their parental
attitudes. A correlational survey design is used in the study and the sample is
composed of 436 mothers of 4- and 5-year-old children attending preschools in
İstanbul. The data were collected using the Parental Attitude Scale and
Child-Parent Shared Reading Activities Scale. In addition to descriptive
statistics, Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Shapiro-Wilk, one-way analysis of variance
(ANOVA), Kruskal-Wallis Variance Analysis, and Sperman Correlation Analysis
tests were used while analyzing the data. As a result of the study, a
significant relationship was found between mothers’ shared book reading
behaviors at home with their children and their democratic, authoritarian and
overprotective parental attitudes whereas no relationship was observed with
permissive parental attitude. In conclusion, it was found that the mothers
receiving high scores from the sub-dimension of democratic attitude read books
more frequently with their children, that they have more books for their
children at home, and that they buy the first book for their children in the
earlier ages of their children. In addition, the results show that their
children want them to read more books, that they like the activity of reading
books more, and that these children show more interest in books while on their
own.
