The Entertainment Culture of Rulers and Subjects in the Emirate of Bukhara
Abstract
Khanate of Bukhara became most powerful political entity in the region after Timurid Empire. During its founding phase, Khanate had a social understanding dominated by traditions of Genghis Khan. However, starting in the second half of the 18th century, Bukhara began to undergo political and socio-cultural transformation. Khanate of Bukhara transitioned to a system based on Islamic rules. This even affected the name of the political structure. Bukhara Khanate began to be referred to as an emirate. Entertainment elements of Mongol culture during Shibanid and Astrakhanid periods were abandoned. With Mangit dynasty, entertainment activities permitted by Sharia law were allowed. These activities were generally games reflecting ancient Turkish cultural elements. Bukhara rulers and their subjects never shared same understanding of entertainment. Generally, rulers and subjects had separate entertainment activities. Emirate rulers were familiar with all entertainment activities known in the region up to that period. Especially importance of entertainment activities increased on holidays and special days. Participating in similar entertainment activities socially contributed to social unity. This study examines the impact of entertainment activities in the emirate on socio-cultural life.
