The concept of unmet health care needs is an important issue that is discussed in various ways in the nursing literature. An in-depth examination of this issue can be a guide in understanding the unmet health care needs of the society and in developing health policies on the subject. The purpose of this review is to explain the definition of the concept of unmet health care need, the factors related to the subject and the way the concept is addressed in the literature. Unmet health care need is defined as a health service that is needed but cannot be provided, and it is a concept of critical importance for nurse researchers. When the literature is examined, it is seen that the concept is addressed in terms of individual and institutional characteristics, and the studies focus on diseases that require long-term treatment and care. There are important gaps in addressing the concept within the framework of national and international health policies. Understanding the concept of unmet health care need can contribute to the nursing profession in taking part as a political subject in the fight against inequalities in health. It is thought that it would be beneficial to address the concept in public health and nursing studies in order to combat inequalities in health.
