A Cross-Cultural Analysis of Love Metaphor in Rumi’s Divan-i Kebir and Dante’s Divine Comedy
Öz
Focusing on two of the most influential writings of the East and West, Mawlana Jalal al-din al-Rumi’s Divan-i Kebir and Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy, this study utilizes Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT), pioneered by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson (1980) and further expanded by Zoltán Kövecses’s (2002) work on emotion metaphors to examine how these two masterpieces utilize Shams-i Tabrizi and Beatrice Portinari who function as ‘‘intermediary metaphors’’ of divine love and spiritual guidance. The study is grounded in an integrated methodological framework that brings together Translation Studies, Cognitive Linguistics, and Hermeneutic textual interpretation. The analysis reveals that while the theological foundations of love in the two traditions are markedly different, both poetic systems employ similar metaphorical mechanisms in which the ‘‘object of love’’ is positioned as a symbolic intermediary directing the seeker toward transcendence. By centering on metaphor translation and the interpretive function of the translator, this study argues that translation is not merely as linguistic transfer but as a form of cognitive and cultural mediation. Within this framework, the translator assumes an active role in the circulation of mystical thought in the broader framework of world literature. The use of Conceptual Metaphor Theory in the Turkish and English translations of Divan-i Kebir and Divine Comedy demonstrates how metaphors employed in these translations have expanded to identify new categories and concepts, filling lexical and cultural gaps in the discourse. The findings of the study are intended to contribute to discussions in the fields of Translation Studies, Comparative Literature, and Cognitive Poetics by proposing a model that demonstrates how metaphorical representations of ‘‘object of love’’ can transcend linguistic and cultural boundaries while preserving their conceptual coherence.
