Is Analytic Philosophy a Question of Rhetoric/Style?

Various past interpretations have described analytic philosophy as a style of doing philosophy.
However, these interpretations focus more on what analytic philosophy is not rather than what it is. In referring to an ‘analytic style,’ commentators have sought to emphasize that analytic philosophers do not share a common epistemological, ethical, or philosophical program, and that analytic philosophy is not defined by a fixed set of doctrines. Moreover, these commentators have not provided a comprehensive account of how this style should be characterized. More recently, however, Michael Rea has argued that contemporary Anglophone Christian philosophy is part of analytic philosophy. To support this claim, he contends that Christian philosophers share the same style as analytic philosophers and further attempts to provide a detailed explanation of what this ‘analytic style’ entails. This study critically examines Rea’s account of analytic style and demonstrates that his descriptions fail to adequately characterize analytic philosophers. Ac- cordingly, this study argues that Christian metaphilosophy and analytic metaphilosophy should be carefully distinguished.
