Öz
This paper examines similarities and differences between 'feeling theory of emotion' presented by William James in his work "What is an Emotion?" and
'physiological theory of emotion' developed by Descarıeefin the Passions of The Soul. Since James' theory identifies an emotion in terms of physical sensations, many
contemporary interpreters take it as a Cartesian feeling\theory. Descartes' theory of emotion depends exclusively on his dualist view. However, James' theory is not subject to the causal priority problem because James holds that the mental and physical states of an emotion are identical and thus there is no problem of causal sequence and priority among them.
