Mentalization is a powerful factor in the individual's accurate interpretation of others and of self and is important in the assessment of both healthy development and psychopathology. This study examines the psychometric properties of the Mentalization Scale, used to measure mentalization whose Turkish adaptation study was conducted in adolescents, in an adult Turkish community sample. The participants are 389 people, 179 female (46.0%), between 18-65 (36.06±11.29). The Perth Alexithymia Scale, Three Dimensional Attachment Style Scale, and Invalidating Childhood Environment Scale were also applied to participants.
In confirmatory factor analysis conducted for the validity of the scale, it was determined that the single (CFI=.91 GFI=.93 AGFI=.91) and four-factor (CFI=.90 GFI=.93 AGFI=.90) structures of the scale were confirmed and found the factor loadings of items ranged from .33 to .73. In the correlation analyses conducted for convergent validity, positive and significant relationships were found. The Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficients were determined .85 for the total scale and ranged from .51 to .66 for the subscales.
As a result, the Mentalization Scale was found to have strong psychometric properties in the adult Turkish community to be valid and reliable and should be used in research and in the assessment of psychotherapy processes.
