PRAISE OF MISERY: ASCETIC MORALITY AND DECADENCE

Abstract

Asceticism has always been a fundamental element of Protestant Christian morality, especially in Western Europe. Asceticism as a way of living based on avoiding worldly pleasures within the framework of Christian morality. In the ascetic life ethic, where the individual chooses to organize his life by making his existence dependent on a higher level of existence, the individual denies the pleasures of daily life for higher spiritual gains. Asceticism, which gained more importance in the modernization process of Europe with Calvinism, forces its believers into an inner-worldly asceticism and makes them dependent on God as the sole purpose of their existence, in line with the logos-centric Western metaphysics. For the person who has no possibility of liberating himself within the realities of the world by adopting a mystical position of faith, and who feels weak, powerless and alone, there is no other option other than turning towards salvation with a sense of duty. This situation, which Nietzsche claimed would ultimately end in nihilism, is directly linked to the phenomenon defined by the thinker as decadence. The phenomenon of decadence in Nietzsche refers to the ascetic Christian roots of the cultural crisis experienced by Europe as a decay. According to Nietzsche, Europe's religious tendency is facing its own end. In this article, it is aimed to make an evaluation of asceticism as a one of the theological bases of the established Western thought tradition, in the context of the phenomenon of decadence in Nietzsche.

SEFALETE ÖVGÜ: ASKETİK AHLÂK VE DEKADANS

Öz

Çilecilik olarak da tanımlanabilecek olan asketizm, Protestan Hıristiyan ahlâkı çerçevesindeki anlamıyla dünyevi zevklerden kaçınmaya dayanan bir yaşama biçimi olarak özellikle Batı Avrupa’daki Hıristiyan ahlâkının temel bir unsurudur. Bireyin yaşamdaki varlığını daha büyük bir varlık seviyesine bağımlı kılarak hayatını düzenleme yoluna gittiği asketik yaşam ahlâkında birey, yüksek manevi kazanımlar için gündelik yaşamın hazlarını inkâr etmektedir. Kalvinizmle birlikte Avrupa’nın modernleşme sürecinde ağırlığı daha da artan asketizm, inananlarını iç dünyacı bir asketizme sıkıştırarak varlıklarının yegane amacını logos-merkezci biçimde kurulmuş Batı metafiziği doğrultusunda aslında Tanrı’ya bağımlı kılmaktadır. İnancın mistik bir konuma geçerek dünyanın gerçekleri içinde özgürleşme ihtimali kalmayan, zayıf, güçsüz ve yalnız hisseden insan için görev bilinciyle kurtuluşa yönelmek dışında bir seçenek kalmamaktadır. Nietzsche’nin nihai olarak nihilizmle sonlanacağını öne sürdüğü bu durum, düşünürün dekadans olarak tanımladığı olguyla da doğrudan bağlantılıdır. Nietzsche’deki dekadans olgusu, bir çürüme olarak Avrupa’nın yaşadığı kültürel krizin asketik Hıristiyan kökenlerine gönderme yapmaktadır. Nietzsche’ye göre Avrupa’nın dini eğilimi, kendi sonunu getirmektedir. Bu makalede de, yerleşik Batı düşünce geleneğinin teolojik dayanaklarından biri olan asketizm ve asketik Hıristiyanlığın, Nietzsche’deki dekadans olgusu bağlamında bir değerlendirmesi yapılması amaçlanmaktadır.
