WHY DOES DERRIDA PRAY?

Abstract

In this study, the relationship between Derrida, who is assumed to be an atheist, and the experience of prayer, which is considered a religious ritual, and to whom and for what he prays will be discussed. Derrida's prayer, which is the subject of the study, will be analyzed by establishing a connection between the importance Derrida attaches to the concept of the future and the fact that prayer is a request for the future. Derrida's prayer will be discussed in the context of concepts such as justice and democracy, which cannot be reduced to the present and are always postponed to the future. In this context, the study will discuss the themes it deals with inspiration from the works of John D. Caputo, who is an important interpreter of Derrida and examines Derrida's thought in its relationship with the field of religious experience.

Öz

Bu çalışmada ateist bir düşünür olarak görülen Derrida’nın dini bir ritüel olarak kabul edilen dua deneyimi ile nasıl bir ilişkisi olduğu ve bu kapsamda kime ve ne için dua ettiği meselesi ele alınacaktır. Derrida’nın gelecek kavramına verdiği önem ve duanın da gelecek olana dair bir talep olması arasında bir bağlantı kurularak çalışmanın konusu olan Derrida’nın duası analiz edilecektir. Derrida’nın duası mevcuda indirgenemeyen ve hep geleceğe ertelenen adalet ve demokrasi gibi kavramlar bağlamında ele alınacaktır. Bu kapsamda çalışmamız konu edindiği temaları önemli bir Derrida yorumcusu olan ve Derrida’nın düşüncesini dini deneyim alanı ile ilişkisi içerisinde alan John D. Caputo’nun çalışmalarından ilhamla ele alacaktır.
