MEANING IN MUSIC ACCORDING TO WITTGENSTEIN

Öz

Ludwig Wittgenstein, a philosopher known for his work on logic and the philosophy of language, is known for his analogies between language and music, which offer an important perspective for understanding the nature of musical meaning. This study examines how Wittgenstein deals with the relationship between music and meaning and discusses these analogies between language and music. According to him, music, like words, does not rely on direct references and gains its meaning through its use and context. Accordingly, Wittgenstein likens understanding a musical sentence to understanding a facial expression. However, an analysis based solely on rules is not sufficient for this analogy. It is a necessity to construct the right context as aesthetic experience. In this study, it is aimed to indicate how Wittgenstein handles music through first and third person perspectives, and it is expressed in a conceptual framework that musical meaning is a public phenomenon rather than an individual experience. The relationship between the theory of language games and music has also gained importance at this point. Thus, it is concluded that, according to Wittgenstein, meaning in music is not only an understanding of the technical structure of music, but also an experienced process between the musician who performs the music and the listener.

WITTGENSTEIN’A GÖRE MÜZİKTE ANLAM

Öz

Ludwig Wittgenstein, mantık ve dil felsefesi üzerine çalışmalarıyla tanınan bir düşünür olarak dil ve müzik üzerine kurduğu analojiler müziksel anlamın doğasını anlamak açısından önemli bir bakış açısı sunmaktadır. Bu çalışma, Wittgenstein’ın müzik ve anlam ilişkisini nasıl ele aldığını incelemekte, dil ile müzik arasında kurduğu bu analojileri tartışmaktadır. Ona göre müzik, kelimeler gibi doğrudan referanslara dayanmayan, anlamını kullanım ve bağlamı içinde kazanan bir yapıdadır. Bu doğrultuda Wittgenstein, bir müzik cümlesini anlamayı, bir yüz ifadesini anlamaya benzetmektedir. Fakat bu benzetme için salt kurallara dayalı bir analiz yeterli değildir. Doğru bağlamın estetik deneyim olarak yapılanması bir gerekliliktir. Çalışmada, Wittgenstein’ın müziği birinci ve üçüncü şahıs perspektifleri üzerinden nasıl ele aldığını belirtmek amaçlanmış, müziksel anlamın bireysel deneyimden çok kamusal bir fenomen olduğu kavramsal bir çerçevede ifade edilmiştir. Dil oyunları teorisi ile müzik arasındaki ilişki de bu noktada önem kazanmıştır. Böylece, Wittgenstein’a göre müzikte anlamın, müziksel teknik yapının anlaşılmasının yanında, müzik performansını gerçekleştiren müzisyen ile dinleyici arasındaki deneyimlenen bir süreç olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.
