FOCUSING ON THE EXPERIENCE OF CATHARSIS TO UNDERSTAND THE PURPOSE OF THE POETICS

Öz

We can say that there are at least two ways to analyze a work of art: the first focuses on the qualities of the work itself, while the second concerns the outcomes that are not directly related to the aesthetic values of art. Although Aristotle did not write an independent work on art, he indicates the place of art within his philosophical system through his work Poetics. However, the work in question, in which the philosopher primarily focuses on tragedy, also raises several questions. The first question that comes to mind is: Was Poetics written with ethical or aesthetic concerns in mind?
In this paper, the question mentioned above is sought to be clarified based on Aristotle's thoughts on art. In this context, in the first stage of our study, previous discussions on the problem are presented; thereafter, with the belief that focusing on the catharsis experience is the most suitable way to understand Poetics, attention is directed to it. In the conclusion section of the paper, the aim of the work is attempted to be demonstrated.

Öz

Bir sanat eserini incelemenin en az iki yolu olduğunu söyleyebiliriz: bunlardan ilki, eserin niteliklerine yöneliktir; diğeri ise sanatın estetik değerleriyle doğrudan ilgisi olmayan sonuçlarına yöneliktir. Aristoteles her ne kadar sanat hakkındaki düşüncelerini müstakil olarak kaleme almamış olsa da Poetika adlı eseriyle sanatın felsefi sistemindeki yerini işaret etmektedir. Ancak, filozofun ağırlıklı olarak tragedya özelinde incelemede bulunduğu söz konusu eser bir takım soruları da beraberinde getirmektedir. İlk akla gelen soru şudur: Poetika etik mi yoksa estetik kaygılarla mı yazılmıştır?
Bu yazıda, Aristoteles’in sanat hakkındaki düşüncelerinden hareketle yukarıda bahsi geçen soru aydınlatılmaya çalışılmıştır. Bu bağlamda, çalışmamızın ilk aşamasında probleme dair önceki tartışmalar gösterilmiş; bunun arından ise Poetika’yı anlamanın en uygun yolu olduğu düşüncesiyle katharsis deneyimine odaklanılmıştır. Yazının sonuç bölümünde ise eserin amacının ne olduğu gösterilmeye çalışılmıştır.
