PRIVATE LANGUAGE ARGUMENT IN WITTGENSTEIN AND THE ROLE OF SOCIAL CONTEXT

Abstract

The aim of this article is to elucidate the private language argument in Wittgenstein’s work titled as ‘Philosophical Investigations’ and to get a clear view about language in relation with philosophical problems. Wittgenstein introduces the description of actual use of language as having a critical importance for eliminating the philosophical confusions, dissolving the same recurring traditional problems and attaining new ways of seeing. To treat this approach properly, it is attempted to expose how language meaningfully understood within the framework of the ordinary language use and in this context to explicate the social nature of linguistic practice. So the idea of an actual language which is operated through social context is supported by the argument against the possibility of private language. So it is laid open to view how Wittgenstein posits language use in relation with form of life. Finally, it can be concluded that all the investigations carried out in the ‘Investigations’ dwell upon the argument which denies private language

WITTGENSTEIN’DA ÖZEL DİL ARGÜMANI VE SOSYAL BAĞLAMIN İŞLEVİ

Öz

Bu makalenin amacı, Wittgenstein’ın Felsefi Soruşturmalar adlı yapıtında işlendiği biçimiyle özel dil sorununun açımlanması ve bu yolla felsefi sorunlarla ilişkisinde dil hakkında bir açıklığa ulaşılmasıdır. Wittgenstein dilin edimsel kullanımının betimlenmesinin felsefi karışıklıkların önüne geçilmesi, kendini sürekli yineleyen geleneksel sorunların çözümlenmesi ve yeni görüş açılarının kazanılması noktasında kritik bir öneme sahip olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır. Bu yaklaşımı uygun bir şekilde ele alabilmek için, kullanımı ekseninde dilin nasıl anlamlandırıldığı ve bu bağlamda dilsel pratiğin sosyal doğası ortaya konulacaktır. Bu çerçevede sosyal bağlamı içinde anlaşılması gereken dil düşüncesi, özel dilin olanaklılığına karşı geliştirilen argümanla desteklenmektedir. Böylece Wittgenstein’ın dil kullanımını yaşam biçimiyle olan ilişkisinde konumlandırdığı açığa çıkar. Sonuç olarak, Soruşturmalar’da yürütülen araştırmaların özel dili reddeden argüman temelinde ortaya konulduğu söylenebilir
