From the Critique of the Enlightenment to the New Politics: Some Thoughts on Alasdair MacIntyre and Richard Rorty

Yıl 2013, Sayı: 16, 175 - 192, 01.12.2013

Öz

This article deals with two authentic and different thinkers, Alasdair MacIntyre and Richard Rorty who have significant contribution to the field of political philosophy. Essentially these two thinkers have brought about different political and moral arguments. MacIntyre centralizes “virtue” by firmly criticizing liberal politics. Rorty on the other hand centralizes “irony” by inviting us to the recognition of our radical contingency. Within the imagination of Rorty there is no place for a substantive virtue, while he celebrates liberal politics. What makes two thinkers close is their critics against the Enlightenment philosophy. Here in this article together with their political and moral arguments as well as drawing upon their anti-Enlightenment perspectives, the possibilities of a new understanding of politics will be elaborated
