THE EPIC OF MAADAY-KARA IN THE CONTEXT OF AXEL OLRIK’S EPIC LAWS
Öz
The Maaday-Kara epic belonging to the Altay Turks living in the Siberian geography is one of the ancient narratives reflecting the epic and mythic accumulation of the Turkish oral cultural tradition. Although the name of the epic is Maaday-Kara, the narrative primarily recounts the struggle and extraordinary heroic adventure of his son Kögüdey-Mergen to save his family, his people, and his homeland. In addition, while the epic addresses the restoration of the disrupted cosmic order as a result of the struggle between good and evil, it also clearly reflects the structural and narrative features unique to the oral narrative tradition. Maaday-Kara, in addition to being the longest epic of the Altay Turks, holds a special importance within the Turkish narrative tradition due to its rich mythic elements and the robustness of its narrative structure and technique. One of the factors that makes the Maaday-Kara epic so significant is its narrator Aleksey Grigoreviç Kalkin. Kalkin is not only the narrator of Maaday-Kara but also a master epic storyteller with a wide epic repertoire. This article examines the Maaday-Kara epic within the framework of Axel Olrik’s epic laws. The Historical-Geographical Finnish School is a comparative folkloristic theory aiming to determine the origin, diffusion paths, and original variant (ur-form) of oral cultural products. Axel Olrik, who made one of the most significant contributions to the analytical development of this school, formulated a text-centered method of analysis and introduced the epic laws. Olrik argues that oral narratives such as folktales, legends, and epics are not transmitted randomly from generation to generation but are shaped according to universal narrative patterns. This theoretical framework, consisting of principles such as repetition, the rule of three, contrast, and the rule of twins, provides an objective and systematic method for folkloristic studies in analyzing the structure, narrative logic, and place within collective memory of oral tradition texts. This article aims to examine the Maaday-Kara epic within the context of the Historical-Geographical Finnish School’s important method, Axel Olrik’s epic laws, to reveal how the narrative structure of the epic is shaped according to the rules of oral culture, to determine its place in oral tradition, and to analyze the epic in terms of structure and narrative logic. In addition, the study also aims to contribute to future comparative epic studies. The sample of the study consists of the Maaday-Kara epic within the Turkish epic tradition. In this study, the text edition of the Maaday-Kara epic in Emine Gürsoy-Naskali’s “Altay Destanı Maaday-Kara” is taken as the basis. Prior to the research, a literature review on the subject was conducted; the study was carried out using document analysis and content analysis methods, which are qualitative research methods. In this context, first a general evaluation of the Altay epic tradition and the Maaday-Kara epic was made. Axel Olrik’s epic laws were discussed and their theoretical framework was explained. Then the plot of the epic was outlined; narrative elements, repetitive narrative patterns, and structural features were analyzed in accordance with the epic laws. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that the Maaday-Kara epic largely corresponds to the epic laws and that numerous examples of these laws are present throughout the epic. These findings demonstrate that the epic strongly embodies the structural features of the oral narrative tradition.
