The impact of digitalization on social life has introduced new forms of exclusion, particularly among young adults. This study examines how university students’ exposure to phubbing (the act of ignoring someone by focusing on one’s phone) affects their sense of university belonging, considering the mediating roles of perceived stress and psychological resilience. The research was conducted using a relational screening model, with data collected from 420 students enrolled in universities in Istanbul and Iğdır, Türkiye. The findings indicate that exposure to phubbing significantly increases students’ perceived stress, decreases their psychological resilience, and negatively affects their sense of university belonging both directly and indirectly. While psychological resilience acts as a protective buffer enhancing the sense of belonging, perceived stress functions as a weakening mediator within this relationship. Structural model analyses revealed a partial mediation effect through perceived stress and psychological resilience in the relationship between phubbing and university belonging. This study offers an original contribution to the literature by addressing the multidimensional effects of digital exclusion on students’ psychological and social well-being. The results highlight the critical role of digital interaction styles in shaping social relationships and institutional commitment in university settings, emphasizing the importance of digital awareness-based interventions within psychological counseling services.
