Medical Education and Mardin from Past to Present: A Monographic Research

Öz

Aim: Throughout history, Nusaybin in Mardin hosted a highly developed educational institution that provided instruction in various fields, including philosophy, logic, literature, geometry, astronomy, medicine, and law. The Nusaybin School of Mardin is regarded as one of the earliest universities in the world. In addition, there is evidence suggesting that one of the earliest forms of medical education may have been provided in Nusaybin, Mardin. This study aims to conduct a monographic investigation into Mardin’s place in the history of medicine, coinciding with the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine at Mardin Artuklu University.
Materials and Methods: The monographic method was selected as the most appropriate approach for examining the historical development and current state of medical education in Mardin. Objective, valid, and reliable sources from the literature on medical education in the region was carefully selected and analyzed. The photographs included in this article were taken by the author in 2023 in accordance with ethical guidelines. In addition, extant works related to medical education in the region were examined through on-site observations, visits, and inspections.
Results: The Maristan complex in Mardin included a hospital that functioned as a faculty of medicine. This hospital stood out as a center where herbal medicines, healing waters, and other therapeutic methods were applied. Contrary to common belief, it is suggested that one of the earliest forms of medical education in Anatolia may have been provided at the Mardin Maristan.
Conclusions: The initiation of medical education in Mardin in 2023 represents an important turning point for the region. It is evident that the establishment of medical education in Mardin—one of the oldest known centers of scientific activity in history—carries special significance. The long-standing role of Mardin and its surroundings as a center of scientific endeavor throughout history could be further honored by the establishment of a medical history museum in the city. Such an initiative would help preserve this rich historical heritage and enhance the meaning and impact of contemporary medical education.
