Two Techniques, Two Organs: Comparative Analysis of Hepatic and Pancreatic Steatosis Using Dual Echo and FATFRAC MRI Sequences

Öz

Aim: Quantitative assessment of hepatic and pancreatic fat content is essential for evaluating metabolic syndrome and organ-specific pathologies. To compare hepatic and pancreatic fat quantification using Dual Echo and FATFRAC MRI sequences and to investigate their correlations with clinical and biochemical parameters.
Materials and Methods: A total of 100 adult patients who underwent abdominal MRI were retrospectively selected. Hepatic and pancreatic fat fractions were measured using Dual Echo (in-phase/out-of-phase)) and FATFRAC methods. Biochemical parameters including ALT, AST, GGT, HbA1c, lipid panel, and demographics were analyzed.
Results: Dual Echo and FATFRAC liver fat measurements showed strong correlation (r=0.82, p<0.001). Moderate correlation was observed for pancreatic fat (r=0.55, p<0.01). Liver fat percentages were significantly correlated with ALT, GGT, and triglyceride levels (p<0.05).
Conclusions: Both Dual Echo and FATFRAC sequences are reliable for hepatic fat quantification; however, inter-method variation is more pronounced for the pancreas. Integration with laboratory values may enhance clinical utility.
