THE IMPACT OF LOW BACK PAIN ON WORK PRODUCTIVITY: A SCALE DEVELOPMENT STUDY

Öz

Aim: Low back pain (LBP) is the most common occupational musculoskeletal disorder and a leading cause of productivity loss. Its high prevalence, chronic course, and adverse effects on quality of life and work performance underscore the need for effective assessment methods. However, existing instruments do not directly measure the impact of LBP on work productivity. This study aimed to develop a valid reliable scale to assess the impact of LBP on work productivity impact.
Materials and Methods: A total of 247 participants were included in the study. Prior to administering the questionnaire to the main sample, a pilot test was conducted with 10 individuals who were not included in the study population. The questionnaire  comprised of four sections. The first section collected data on participants’ sociodemographic characteristics, health status, and work-related conditions. The remaining sections included the Lumbar Pain & Work Scale (LPW) developed by the research team, the EuroQol 5-Dimension Questionnaire (EQ-5D), and the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI).
Results: Following the analyses, the initial 25-item pool was reduced to 20 items. A five-factor structure comprising 20 items was identified, and each factor was named according to its content. The final instrument was designated as the LPW Scale.
Conclusions: The LPW Scale demonstrated acceptable psychometric properties and appears to be a valid and reliable instrument for assessing the impact of low back pain on work productivity, facilitating the identification of productivity-related problems in the working population.
