Evaluation of Smoking Addiction Levels and Compliance with Tobacco Control Law Among Administrative Staff of a University Hospital

Öz

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the levels of smoking addiction and compliance with tobacco control laws among administrative staff working in a university hospital, and to examine their knowledge of tobacco control
Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among administrative staff at the hospital between 15 and 30 October 2025. The aim was to survey the entire population; after applying the inclusion/exclusion criteria, the study included 204 participants. Data were collected on sociodemographic characteristics, knowledge of and attitudes towards tobacco policies, and information on Law No. 4207 and the Fagerström Nicotine Dependence Test (FNBT). The data were analysed using appropriate statistical tests.
Results: Forty percent of participants were active smokers, with a mean FNBT score of 4.03 ± 2.17. Awareness of tobacco bans in the institution was significantly higher among smokers (p = 0.001). Similarly, smokers were more likely to find the institution’s tobacco policies adequate (p<0.001). Those who supported the indoor smoking ban were found to have lower FNBT scores than those who did not (p = 0.021). Of the articles in Law No. 4207, the lowest rate of correct knowledge was observed in relation to the statement ‘tobacco use is prohibited in elderly care homes, psychiatric hospitals and prisons’, and it was found that smokers significantly more often correctly identified this article (p < 0.001).
Conclusions: The study found that administrative personnel had insufficient knowledge of some tobacco control laws, and that particularly low levels of awareness were observed among those who supported the indoor smoking ban. It is recommended that awareness of internal tobacco policies and legal knowledge be increased, and that smoking cessation support and training programmes be strengthened.
