The Relationship Between Emotional Intelligence and Burnout: A Research in the Public Sector
Öz
Employee’s high emotional intelligence level
reveals many positive results in the workplace. People with high emotional
intelligence work in solidarity and harmony with their colleagues. In the case
of burnout, the performance of employees is affected in a negative way which
may lead to material and spiritual losses. For this reason, identification of
the factors affecting burnout is important. The aim of this study is to
investigate the effects of the sub-dimensions of emotional intelligence of
employees on sub-dimensions of burnout in the public sector. In this study, for
the employees working in a long-established public institution located in
Ankara, the differences of emotional intelligence and burnout levels related to
gender and occupational characteristics and the impact of emotional
intelligence on burnout are investigated. A survey was conducted with 343
employees working for the Institution. According to the findings of the
research, there exists no significant difference of emotional intelligence level
of public employees in terms of gender; whereas there exists a significant
difference between employees’ levels of emotional intelligence according to the
employees’ professions. In addition, it is determined that the optimism/mood
regulation and utilization of emotions, sub-dimensions of emotional
intelligence, has a significant positive effect on the feeling of personal
accomplishment, one of the sub-dimensions of burnout.
